With an eclectic group of influences from Stevie wonder to Radiohead their sound features a mixture of alternative indie rock with an element of blues. ‘APOLOGY TO THE FEMININE’, is a rock track through and through with great electric guitar rifts and a pumping sound. The vocals are solid and consistent and easy to sing along to. The lyrics are about a male’s sexuality and his expectations of the defined lines between male and female. There is a realisation that femininity is not a negative quality in a man. ‘REVELATION’ is a slower track that mixes an electric guitar with an interesting off reggae beat, which is very faint but works quite well giving the track a great rhythm. The lyrics in this track are about a male’s acceptance of love and finding that he doesn’t have to be alone he learns that keeping himself closed off just intensifies his pain. The track is pretty engaging and changes three quarters of the way through into the bridge to a powerful eclectic rock rift that’s really emotive.
‘SOAR’, is the third track on the album and it takes on a funkier sound. Elements of Jazz and rock blend into a colourful rhythm that is contagious. A modern take on scatting in this track is really interesting. The lyrics are inspiring and talk about taking control of your life and making a change within yourself and others. We all have the ability to make our own choices. ‘Carpe diem’, explains the feel of this track. ‘GOD’ is the fourth track on the album is one of the best tracks. The lyrics are very emotive and powerful they speak about unity and confusion in life. The moral that ‘We are all God’ is also the last lyric of the song. The sound of this track reminds me of the band Muse because of the raw guitar rifts. And lastly ‘ALIVE’ is the live track on the album, it’s a song with a deep bass and reggae beat that’s great to rock too. It’s more passionate than the other tracks in the sense that you really feel the music. I love this composition and I think it being live definitely does it justice. It’s a vey positive track that brings to life reality as it stands; something we don’t always pay attention to.
For a first record Zalinski have got a great selection of tracks that reflect an eclectic sound and a mix of rock and blues that works really well. The vocals fit the composition well but are nothing challenging or much different from an indie/pop sound. But one thing I really like about this band is how they’ve incorporated funk and blues bass into the rocky sound of an electric guitar. The rifts sound really powerful and emotive and the tracks themselves are a good reflection of the different sounds the band work with. The lyrics are inspiring and passionate and reflect a learning curve of revelations. The album celebrates a positive reality in a broken world full of escapism.
