OBEHI - EVERYTHING
Soulful 22-year-old Obehi is being tipped all over the internet as the next big thing for R&B this year.
Nigerian-born and raised in Glasgow, the pretty young songstress offers a refreshing alternative to some of the wild, in-your-face artists around at the moment. Quite frankly, it’s just nice to see a female artist who doesn’t use sex appeal to flog her music.
‘Everything’ is the debut EP from Obehi; three tracks that all differ in their own special ways but all of which boast Obehi’s sugary sweet vocals throughout.
Lead track ‘Everything’ mixes piano-tinkering verses with a modern R&B beat and no one can argue with a love song that makes you want to dance.
On ‘For You’, Obehi’s voice is sassy but still as sweet as before. The vocals are layered across the sort of ice cool Timberlake-esque sound which sounds too good for just any old dance floor.
‘Don’t Come Home to me’ has all the attitude and attraction reminiscent of 90s queens of R&B, TLC, with its addictive chorus:” Don’t come home to me/ And kiss me on the cheek.”
This EP is a good effort from a very talented singer, but is this really the time for R&B? As previously mentioned, there are so many outlandish artists out there, a naturally talented artist like Obehi is going to have to work extra hard to get herself noticed in the wilderness of the music world.
2PLAY (FEAT MAXI PRIEST, MONI, JUXCI D) - THATS WHAT THE GIRLS LIKE
In case the name 2Play (real name Wesley Johnson) doesn’t ring a bell, he is a successful record producer, has enjoyed top ten success in the UK with two hits (‘So Confused’ in 2003 followed by ‘It Can’t Be Right’ in 2004) and has even been the recipient of a MOBO award. However, he is perhaps, rather tragically, best known for his involvement in an ill-advised cover and RnB remix of George Michael classic “Careless Whisper” back in 2005.Now, five years later, he is back with new single “That’s What The Girls Like.” ‘What has he been DOING for five years?!’ I hear you cry. Well, apart from a less than successful single in 2007 ‘Close To You’, he has been pursuing an altogether different dream of Cage Fighting, chasing after the cage fighting championship. He has now taken a step out of the ring in order to revive his musical career once again.
The single itself is harmless; mildly catchy but a bit bland, certainly repetitive and even sounding a little outdated. 2Play has teamed up with old mates Maxi Priest, Juxci D and Moni for the track, who have all been involved with his previous projects. His mix of RnB beats, smooth vocals and reggae undertones will make this tune a sure-fire bump n grind hit on certain dance floors but will more than likely struggle to make much of an impact on the UK chart
GINUWINE - A MAN'S THOUGHTS
A MAN'S THOUGHTS is the 6th album from American R&B artist Ginuwine and sees him taking on a plethora of challenging issues facing modern man such as; Who is fitter Danni Minogue or Sheryl Cole? What's best down the pub, pork scratchings or chilli nuts? And am I a bad person if I fancy my girlfriends mum? Ok I'm just teasing, this is a collection of 14 silky smooth jams that allow Ginuwine, a man, to elucidate his thoughts on relationships, love, and how hard it can be to be in love and in a relationship.
The album commences with Ginuwine thanking his fans personally for 13 years of support with sounds of crowd adulation in the background, a nice thought, but a brief mention in the album liner notes would have sufficed. Instead it's a rather smug and self satisfied opening. There is a further thank you list taking up two pages of the inlay and again this comes across as being a bit over the top, like an embarrassing award ceremony acceptance speech, however it does leave you realising that this is a man who is not afraid to express himself and reveal his feelings, even if the results are a bit cringe inducing. Speaking of cringing there are plenty of moments that left me wincing on this record, such as the spoken word introduction to SHOW OFF, a moment so laughable you'd be forgiven to think it was intended as parody.
